I am tempted to do so here since this is a great book. It focuses on the concepts and strategies that Ben Askren has applied in order to achieve great results even with a less than ideal training environment.
The book is based on a series of interviews that Dan Faggella did with Ben Askren. He takes the concepts that Ben shared and then adds scientific support for why it works.
That sounds like the beginning of a ordinary review… I must resist, I must resist, I must resist.
Whew… I think I succeeded.
What I Learned from the Book
The main benefit for me was the opportunity to learn from the experience of someone else. The book highlights Ben Askren’s thought process and training strategies.
It also makes a great argument for why those strategies allowed him to succeed even at a college that had never produced a NCAA champion before.
The expectation was that if you don’t train with the best, there is no way for you to become the best. Ben proved them wrong.
How Ben Askren trained was a reinforcement of the idea that internal factors matter more than external. How you think about training, the methods you use to improve outside of class, and the character you develop as a result were all highlighted for me.
How to Apply the Strategies to BJJ
The links between Wrestling, MMA, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are quite clear. There are some significant differences in how wrestlers are developed and how we are in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu though.
Those differences don’t matter at all.
These concepts can be applied in the pursuit of any form of knowledge. Let’s list them:
So let’s apply them.
Be Your Own Boss
Take responsibility for your own training and development. It’s a simple concept, I know.
The benefit is that it helps you make a shift towards focusing on what you can do to improve rather than what others can do to help you. So it makes it easier to see opportunities for learning when you can’t make it to class or you don’t have the best training environment.
When it comes to learning Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, there are so many opportunities out there.
Methods to the Madness
I don’t want to share the actual strategies that you will find in the book.
One thing that I will share is a idea. It’s simply that the benefit you receive from any activity is largely determined by your mindset and thought process.
Each of the strategies highlighted in the book reinforce that idea, and the applications to BJJ are absolutely clear.
It’s Not About the Destination, It’s About What You Will Have to Become to Get There
That headline is pretty clear, isn’t it?
There are qualities that separate the highly successful from the average. The key thing to understand is that anyone can develop their qualities.
Strength of character can be applied in any discipline, and BJJ is definitely one of them.
Where You Can Find the Book
I’m going to give you three links. One is to the website that Dan Faggella put up to highlight the meaningful benefits of the books. The second is to Amazon where it can be purchased. Last but not least is to the Science of Skill order page where you can purchase the book with a special bonus.
