I would rather hear the truth told a thousand times and in a thousand different ways than hear a lie told once. I have no doubt that I am not alone in that preference, but I want to challenge the idea that wisdom can become trite blather if it is repeated.
Repetition is how you take knowledge that is understood on a conscious level and transfer it to the subconscious. It is how movements become natural, and it is how concepts become ingrained.
So every time you hear the same concept repeated it’s just like a hammer driving it in deeper and deeper until you don’t have to think about it. It just becomes so interwoven in your thought process that you can just apply without hesitation in your technique or life.
One quick example of how amazing concepts are repeated across barriers of time and location can be seen in the following quotes:
David Schwartz: Defeat is only a state of mind, and nothing more.
Michael Jordan: If you never lose, how would you know that you love to win? Losing is a mindset, not an event.
Bruce Lee: Defeat is a state of mind; no one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality.
All of those quotes that reaffirm the concept that defeat is a state of mind were found without any effort to search on my part. If I had put any effort into it, I have no doubt that I would found countless more examples of this same basic concept expressed by individuals who probably never interacted with each other.
The key point is that the concept is being repeated because it has been proven to be true.
